Légère Reeds was founded in 1998 by Dr. Guy Légère, a clarinetist and scientist, and Dr. Mark Kortschot, a materials science professor. The company began with Guy’s frustration with the inconsistencies of natural cane reeds and his desire to create a durable, consistent synthetic alternative. After extensive research and development, they created the first prototypes, which were successfully test-marketed at ClarinetFest 1998, where they sold out quickly.
The reeds are made from 100% polypropylene that is put through a unique process to orient the polymer fibers, which increases its stiffness and durability. This material doesn’t absorb moisture, so the reeds don’t need to be soaked and are ready to play immediately.
The company continues to innovate, developing different cuts and styles to suit a wide range of musicians and instruments, including the Classic Signature, American, and French cut reeds, which are designed for specific playing styles.
